EducationSuperHighway Announces $9M In Funding To Improve School Broadband

December 4th, 2013 by THN News No comments »

(The Hosting News) – In the U.S., 72 percent of schools do not receive reliable internet connections, which is why EducationSuperHighway’s mission is to deliver public schools the bandwidth needed in order to further student’s education.

This nonprofit organization is determined to ensure that K-12 public schools have “reliable, high capacity Internet access so they can take advantage of the promise of digital learning.”

“Game changing technologies are transforming teaching and learning, but over 40 million students are being left behind without the Internet access and Wi-Fi they need to take full advantage of digital learning. If we want our children to be competitive in the global knowledge economy, we must upgrade the Internet infrastructure in America’s public schools,” stated EducationSuperHighway’s CEO, Evan Marwell.

Earlier today, ESH announced in a press release that the Mark Zuckerberg’s Startup: Education, the Gates Foundation, and various other foundations have donated around $9 million to the organization.

“The future of our economy and society depend largely on the next generation using and building new online tools and services, and I’m glad to support EducationSuperHighway’s work,” said Zuckerberg via ESH’s press release.

Currently, there is around $2.4 billion in the FCC’s E-rate program, which is designed to provide schools with internet access. ESH is encouraging teachers and administrators to take the free National SchoolSpeedTest in order to determine their school’s internet speed

GoDaddy Teams With Microsoft and Parallels To Create Windows-Based Web Hosting

December 4th, 2013 by THN News No comments »

(The Hosting News) - GoDaddy, the world’s largest Web hosting provider, has teamed up with Microsoft and Parallels to create a new Windows-based Web hosting offering at GoDaddy. The improved Web hosting option gives customers better performance, more stability and an easy-to-use interface to manage their accounts.

This evolution is part of GoDaddy’s new corporate strategy that concentrates the company on developing best-in-class products to help small business owners and entrepreneurs grow online. GoDaddy has evolved its Web hosting architecture to create a fast, consistent experience for its customers, by increasing CPU and RAM, and lowered the density per server. Now, by leveraging Windows Server 2012, customers will experience world-class storage, networking and performance.

“There’s an old adage in technology, when buying a new product, you can choose two of the following three – speed, reliability and affordability,” said GoDaddy Senior Vice President and General Manager Hosting Jeff King. “That isn’t the case with our new Windows Web hosting – with GoDaddy, you can have all three. The product takes the stability of Windows Server 2012, adds it to our hyper-fast Web hosting infrastructure and is easy-to-use thanks to Parallels Plesk Panel. This is a big step forward, but it’s only the beginning … watch this space, we’re just getting started.”

“Microsoft has introduced Cloud OS functionality designed specifically for hosting service providers with the release of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2,” said Microsoft Vice President, Hosting Service Providers, Marco Limena. “As a longtime Microsoft partner, we’re confident GoDaddy’s decision to take advantage of Windows Server 2012 will satisfy customers and provide improved performance, scalability and automation they demand.”

The addition of Parallels Plesk Panel saves Web professionals time by simplifying com...

8 Differences Between Elves and (Patent) Trolls

December 4th, 2013 by THN News No comments »

(The Hosting News) – Today, Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) Co-Founder and Board Chair Christian Dawson released the following statement and blog post looking at the problems that “patent trolls” bring to U.S. business and innovation:

“i2Coalition urges the House of Representatives to pass HR 3309, the Innovation Act, so that American Internet companies can fight back against the scourge of ‘patent trolls’,” said Christian Dawson, i2Coalition Co-Founder and Board Chair. “Chairman Goodlatte’s bill contains a number of provisions that would arm the victims of frivolous lawsuits with the tools they need to ensure that the Internet and its related industries continue to be the engine that drives America’s innovation economy.”

During this holiday season as Congress considers what to do about patent trolls (“patent assertion entities” for all you lawyer types), we thought it might be useful to look at the differences between helpful holiday elves and their pointy-eared cousins.

1. Elves bring holiday cheer. Patent trolls bring lawsuits.

2. Elves help the economy. Patent trolls cost U.S. businesses at least $29 billion a year.

3. Elves build things. Patent trolls profit from what others build.

4. Elves work for Santa. Patent troll hide their identities.

5. Elves make lists of good little boys and girls to reward. Patent trolls make lists of good little businesses to punish, with more than half of the targets of patent lawsuits having less than $10 million in revenue.

6. Elves keep children happy. Patent trolls keep lawyers happy.

7. Elves promote innovation. Patent trolls impede progress.

8. Elves win smiles nearly 100% of the time. Patent trolls win just 9.2% of the cases that actually go to trial.

Join the elves and fight the patent trolls. T...
