Google Reaches Settlement in EU Antitrust Investigation

February 5th, 2014 by THN News No comments »

(The Hosting News) – After a three year long investigation by the European Antitrust Commission, Google has reached an agreement regarding its unfair treatment of competitors in its search results.

Under the agreement, Google would not have to pay a fine but would have to change its European search results to favor its competitors, reports The Washington Post.

The company will have to display results from three of its competitors in the same manner it would to promote its own services, as well as clearly labeling search results that allow users to identify between “natural” search results and ones promoted by Google.

“Without preventing Google from improving its own services, it provides users with real choice between competing services presented in a comparable way,” stated EU Antitrust Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.

In the European market, Google is used for about 90 percent of Internet searches, compared to the 70 percent in the U.S.

Before the Commission makes a final decision about Google’s proposal, 18 of the original plaintiffs will have to review it for evaluation.

“We will be making significant changes to the way Google operates in Europe,” said Kent Walker, Google’s general counsel. “The company now looks forward to resolving the matter for good.”

Last year, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission investigating the company on similar charges, but decided not to pursue any further actions.
